1) What is the cost of the Calibration Training and when is it offered?

1) What is the cost of the Calibration Training and when is it offered?

LMI offers this training at no charge when conducted at our factory location in Sweetwater, TX or at Protean Instrument in Knoxville, TN. Accommodations and meals must be provided by the attendees. Training is scheduled around mid-month and dates are listed under Training Course Schedule on the main Training page. If you are interested in registering for this training, click on the date your would like to attend in the course schedule, and click the register button. You can also contact us via e-mail at . Please include the date you would like to attend and the number and names of attendees.

2) What background do I need to take the training?

2) What background do I need to take the training?

We strongly recommend that the participant have some previous training in the field of Health Physics, as we do not cover that in the training. Knowledge of the basic types and properties of ionizing radiation, as well as units of measurement, is necessary to get the maximum benefit from the training.

3) What do I need to bring to the training?

3) What do I need to bring to the training?

A scientific calculator is often useful, but not required. A class handout and pen are provided.

4) Upon completion of the two-day Calibration Training, will I be certified to perform instrument calibrations?

4) Upon completion of the two-day Calibration Training, will I be certified to perform instrument calibrations?

Ludlum Measurements is not a regulatory agency and can only certify our own personnel to perform calibrations. This is in accordance with our Radioactive Materials License issued by the State, which specifically authorizes the Company to perform Commercial Calibrations.

Only your State or a Federal Government Agency such as NRC or DOD/DOE can certify an organization to perform calibrations.

Ludlum Measurements will issue a Certificate of Training for the classroom hours attended. Evidence of factory training is required by some States.

5) Does LMI offer classes that will teach me how to use the instruments?

5) Does LMI offer classes that will teach me how to use the instruments?

Unfortunately, no. We do provide videos on our website and our YouTube channel that offer basic information about some of our instruments. These are intended for First Responders. Ludlum Measurements is an instrument design and manufacturing company, but our personnel are not trained or certified in the field of Health Physics. We and our representatives do have many contacts in the Health Physics field and will be happy to provide you what contact information we may have for your area.

6) What will it cost to set up the equipment and sources for my organization to perform calibration?

6) What will it cost to set up the equipment and sources for my organization to perform calibration?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It is very dependent on the type and level of radiation that the equipment may see. At the very least, when instruments used to detect low levels of contamination will be used, a NIST traceable pulser and NIST traceable sources will be required. For instrument and detector combinations where the anticipated levels of radiation can be high, the cost and regulatory requirements will go up substantially. As a rule of thumb, we say $10,000 on the low end and $40,000 and up on the higher end, depending on the source(s) needed. Any calibration activity will probably require that you have a State Radioactive Materials License or one issued directly by the NRC (for non-agreement States).

7) Can I get copies of Ludlum calibration specifications to review?

7) Can I get copies of Ludlum calibration specifications to review?

Yes, Ludlum will provide working copies of calibration specifications. These are controlled documents and only updated in house. Contact us at to obtain a PDF version. They are filed by the instrument model number, meter face and detector.

8) Are the Calibration and Repair courses ever offered in my area?

8) Are the Calibration and Repair courses ever offered in my area?

We do occasionally offer our free calibration training class off-site, such as at Health Physics Society meetings. Please watch our website for announcements of upcoming off-site classes.

9) If my organization wishes to have the two-day class taught on site for a number of people, can that be arranged and what will be the cost?

9) If my organization wishes to have the two-day class taught on site for a number of people, can that be arranged and what will be the cost?

Training at your site is available for a fee. The price for training is based on our expenses (travel, hotel, meals, etc.).
